The Eastern Cape town of Uitenhage is one of immense beauty and boasts a brilliant array of natural spectacles to rivet all those that get the privilege of visiting it. Like most towns in the province, Uitenhage has a rich history; founded in 1804, there are still many buildings that bear vivid testimony to this heritage namely the Town Hall, the Court House, and the Drostdy. These landmarks have been kept in fairly good condition, while the Victorian and Settler-inspired architecture found in and around the town makes it an interesting attraction amongst avid history buffs especially. Uitenhage is also home to a Volkswagen Factory/Plant, which provides employment for many of the town’s 300 000 strong population; still going strong, the VW plant has recently produced its 400 000th Polo.
But really when you’re traveling to this part of the world what you’re looking for is its undulating natural spectacles that are incredibly evident throughout the area. Uitenhage is situated at the foothills of the Winterhoek Mountains that adds a dramatic majesty to the town’s already magnificent landscape. This landscape features many rolling parks and gardens that are dotted with the local flower, the Strelitzia, which infuses the escarpment with rich colour and serenity. Furthermore, Uitenhage is only 45km away from the Addo Elephant Park, which is a superb outing especially for the children who always seem to be quite fascinated with these supreme animals. The friendly city of Port Elizabeth is not very far from Uitenhage either and offers travellers a plethora of attractions and delights to enjoy during their holiday.
