There’s no other theme park quite like uShaka Marine World in Durban, South Africa. While it’s not the largest aquarium in the world (it’s certainly the largest in Africa), uShaka Marine World is more than just an aquarium, it’s a spectacular waterpark with a series of themed sections. They are uShaka Sea World, uShaka Wet 'n Wild, uShaka Beach, uShaka Village Walk and uShaka Kids World.
The site is named after Zulu king Shaka who was a leading figure in the history of the region.
uShaka Marine World is 16ha in size and is located along Durban’s seafront. The beach in the park is a Blue Flag designated beach, a European accreditation granted to beaches offering all amenities, with high standards of safety and cleanliness. Lifeguards patrol the beach and the water is protected by shark nets.
The aquarium at uShaka Sea World has underground viewing galleries that extend for 500m and are designed around 4 shipwrecks where all manner of fish congregate. There are dolphin and seal shows, shark feeding, restaurants (one with viewing panel into the aquarium) and a lagoon to snorkel with tropical fish.
uShaka Wet ‘n Wild offers a series of water rides that range from a slow river boat ride to a thrilling blast on the highest water slide in the southern hemisphere. The area has a few informal restaurants.
The uShaka Village Walk is designed on a model of an African village where shoppers delight in the unique African designs, fashions and crafts on sale. Needless to say, there are more restaurants.
uShaka Kids World has sandpits, caves, water cannons and many other items to keep children endlessly entertained.
Other exciting offerings are shark cage diving, an ocean walker dive experience and a dangerous creatures exhibit to thrill the family. A visit to uShaka Marine World will leave you smiling but totally exhausted!
