the Midlands Meander is dotted with charming villages that offer an assortment of accommodations, wedding venues, restaurants and cafés, rural country activities, wildlife reserves, adventure sports, trout farms, historical landmarks, and unique arts and crafts. The Midlands Meander is the ultimate country getaway.

The Midlands Meander covers approximately 80km, from Rietvlei and Currys Post in the east, to Dargle Valley and Fort Nottingham in the west. It is a beautiful countryside of rolling green hills, open pastures, forests, streams, dams, and waterfalls. The wide open spaces and picture-perfect setting makes it a natural haven for artists to find peace and inspiration. The route owes its existence to a group of artists and crafters who decided that the best way to showcase their wares was to lure travellers off the N3 highway, between Durban and Johannesburg, to meander along the quaint country roads.

We stayed at Otter's Den for one night while attending to some wedding planning in the area. We arrived in the evening and were warmly welcomed by the lovely owners, Jeff and Alice. They were so friendly and accommodating, and really went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. The room we stayed in was very large, and included a jacuzzi bath, feather down duvet on the bed and a balcony overlooking Lion's River. Breakfast was very reasonably priced and was an experience in itself! Although we did not stay long, we managed to hike down to the river. We didn't see the otter, but the walk was enjoyable and easily negotiable, even in sandals. The area is absolutely beautiful - being out in nature is really good for the soul. We would recommend Otter's Den for a short overnight or weekend stay.

We stayed in Ikwela Cottage overlooking the Lions River. Well appointed with a very comfortable bed and lovely goose down duvets. A big plus is a separate loo. We spotted many birds and loved falling asleep to the sound of the river trickling below. All in all a very pleasant visit.

We slept over on route from Jozi to Durban for business.
We slept in the Copper chalet which is very spacious and practical.
The view from the bedroom and porch over the Lions River with the noise of water rushing over rocks let you forget about the city very quickly.
In the main bedroom overlooking the valley is a spa bath, what a nice experience.

we stayed at Otters den in Dec 2015 for 4 nights and really Jeff and Alice just couldn't do enough for us . What an awesome couple so accommodating and the views from our cottage were just stunning. So peaceful in the countryside, overlooking the river really just a piece of paradise, would recommend these cottages to all. all units are well fitted and equipped.

We stayed at Otters Den in Dec 14 for two nights on our way down to the south coast. Units are very well fitted out with a great view of the river below and the valley. The hospitality we received was great. Units are very well kept and very clean with all of the utilities you would need for a self catering stay. They are located fairly close to town and the tourist attractions, but far out of town enough to ensure a peaceful stay in the country.
We had a great stay and will Definitely return there as a stay over to enjoy the area.
