Situated in the tranquil village of Vanrhynsdorp, the Van Rhyn Guest House offers traditional West Coast hospitality and service. An ideal place to spend a few days exploring the surrounding area and discovering the richness and diversity of the West Coast, "Knersvlakte", Hantam Karoo, Namaqualand and its people. Victorian in style, the house was originally built in 1916 and still retains much of its original character and charm. We, your hosts Ernest and Herbert and our staff, invite you to make yourselves at home and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of our lodgings. Besides offering warm hospitality and friendly service, our aim is to ensure that your stay will prove to be a memorable one.
The Guest House is fully licensed and therefore able to invite you to try some of the local wines from the Olifants River wine Route. Breakfast is part of our standard fare and dinner can be arranged by prior arrangement. Watched over by the majestic Maskam - part of the Matsikamma range - Vanrhynsdorp was founded in 1751 as Trutro (Troe-Troe). 1881 saw the name changed to the present one in honour of the Van Rhijn family for their invaluable contributions to the community. For travellers from the North (Namibia) and North East (Gauteng, Free State, etc) Vanrhynsdorp serves as an ideal entry and stop over point to explore the West Coast. It is also the gateway to Namaqualand, Hantam Karoo and the Cederberg. The village is accessed from the N7 (Cape Town - Namibia) or the R27 from Calvinia via the Vanrhyn's Pass through the Bokkeveld Mountains.
Guests are accommodated in 9 comfortably furnished en-suite rooms. Heating / Airconditioning or fans in all rooms. Breakfast is supplied as part of our standard fare. Dinner / Light supper can be provided on request either on arrival, but preferably by prior arrangement. Should guest's wish to braai, a portable braai is available. We are fully liscenced and carry a fair range of soft drinks, beer, wine and spirits. No TV's in the rooms but the Lounge offers DStv with large screen TV and surround sound. Available to guest's is the sizeable CD, Video and DVD collection of ours for your listening or viewing pleasure. Private pool patio for relaxing on those long, hot summer days or for enjoying a sundowner or meal alfresco.
The Van Rhyn Guest House boasts the only Art Gallery in our area which is housed in the main house. Established in July 2001 this was an initiative between Koos Coetzee (a Vanrhynsdorp artist), the West Coast Art Association and ourselves to establish a home for the Association members in which to display their talents and hopefully reach a wider audience. The Gallery is also host to artists from outside our immediate vicinity. At the opening of the Gallery 60 paintings adorned the walls, this has now grown to around 110 and at the exhibitions held, as many as 130 paintings were displayed.

Vanrhynsdorp Reviews
Good location for overnight stop.
Nice quiet rural town.
We were flower hunting and it was a perfect place to do that from. Even though the weather was against us, we still saw lovely flowers.
All surroundings even with little bit of flowers!!
It has a nice new OK mini market for buying groceries and a butcher and bottle store all right at the entrance to the town and two petrol stations. There is a well renowned succulent nursery in town and a nice coffee shop.
It is situated on the knersvlakte with unique biodiversity and incredible succulents and flowers.
I would like to retire in Vanrhynsdorp.
