The Karoo Art hotel goes beyond playing the role of gallery for an eclectic stable of local and regional artists. It is also a celebration of all the many other arts associated with a classic country hotel, the art of the bakery, the art of the kitchen, the art of the bar, the art of coffee, the art of elegant simplicity, the art of the long stay.
All 15 rooms are individual in character and are a great reflection of the owner and decorator Sue Melvill’s vision for what a classic Karoo bedroom should be; “to me, the karoo is all about stillness, honesty, and serenity. And that’s what I want in our bedrooms. Along with beautiful fabrics, finishes, and unexpected details, lavender sachets, real coffee, proper teapots, and sherry out of a vintage crystal glass before bedtime. There are 3 different room categories: Klein Karoo Rooms, Groot Karoo Rooms, and the spacious Garden Suite.
Whenever you find a particular weekend or other period is blocked, this doesn’t necessarily mean that no accommodation is available. Accommodation might still be available through specific enquiries at the hotel. Please send us an email with your specific enquiries in such instances.

Karoo Art Hotel is an ideal home-base from which the to explore the magnificent Klein Karoo! Barrydale is within easy reach of the Warmwaterberg hot water springs, and the well known lunch stop Ronnie’s Sex Shop.
While Barrydale the ideal overnight stop on the way to Oudtshoorn and the famous Swartberg Pass, or the fertile charms of Wilderness and the Garden Route, Barrydale is most certainly a destination in its own right. It is home to international and local escapees and artists, eager to trade in urban neuroses for the intimacy and charm of village life. Quirky hotel. Good food and ambiance. Worth a stay!
Really nice authentic building with great rooms. Nice with all the art and the artistic decoration of the rooms. Dinner and breakfast were also great! The town of Berrydale was also kind of funky. Loved it!
The hotel is definitely a very unique place to stay. This was such a beautiful experience made even better by the staff. Kyle, the General Manager, Derek the chef and JC in the bar, well done on exceptional service, great food and everything we wished for. I can recommend the hotel to everyone wanting something different and special.
Cozy comfortable stay. Cozy with interesting art theme.
What a find! A true oasis as you exit the meandering Tradouws Pass and entire the semi-arid Karoo of South Africa. Warm smiles, the best of creature comforts, accompanied by a Diners Club Diamond Award Wine List and haute cuisine by the executive chef Alicia Gillomee, leaves nothing to be wanted.
Do not miss this spot, even if you have to take a detour and see why it has become The Place to rest and find yourself amidst the best of South African art.
Everything in Barrydale is great! And this place is no exception.
Always interesting. Food delicious. Staff exceptional.
Had a good dinner in the restaurant. The service everywhere in the hotel, was excellent, the bar provided some fun times with the DJ option with all the LP's.... loads of fun.
Wish I could come here on a regular basis. Will highly recommend to anyone passing through. The food and service cannot be matched or should be matched.
The entire hotel is an amazing experience - it's filled with interesting art in every room and most of it is for sale! We stayed in room #6 which offered an en-suite bedroom with balcony doors that overlooked the garden and pool area (and glowed golden with the Karoo sunrise the next morning). As our stay was during mid-winter we really appreciated the panel heater and the electric blankets on the bed! The MOST comfortable sleep I have had in ages!! The room also offered a coffee/tea tray which can with fresh plunger coffee, and it included basic toiletries and a hair dryer, as well as a good WiFi connection. There is an on-site bar and restaurant for delicious dinner and breakfast. The hotel also runs a classic movie vintage bio-scope on Fridays!

The r62 pass was nice
Walking around the quiet town and finding the Karoo Art hotel where we had a lovely experience and dinner
Can walk everywhere, very friendly.
Small beautiful country town!
Nature at its best. Lovely and friendly people who makes your visit all the better!
Milkshakes at Diesel and Cream!
A great place with a nice old school feel you don't get much anymore, Diesel and Cream and Blue Cow are 2 must stops for all! 👌
Beautiful town with an eclectic, diverse population.
Beautiful little town, close enough to Cape Town for a weekend getaway. Lots of quaint little shops and restaurants to keep you busy, but also allows you to just relax and recharge.
Very popular stop on Route 62, you won’t be disappointed!
Diesel and Creme always worth a visit and the local brewery is also a great spot. The Tradouws pass itself is amazingly beautiful and worth a visit for a picnic and a swim.
Diesel and Crème Vintage Restaurant, the vibe and the droëwors!
