Area Information:
Swellendam owes its original development and existence to the relationships that existed between the Khoi people who supported and bartered with the Trekboers and the Ambagswerf at the Drostdy Museum was built to demonstrate the trades and skills that Swellendam was renowned for.

In the mid-19th century, the little hamlet of Malgas once played a much bigger role in the Overberg than it does today. Because the Breede is navigable for around 50km inland to Malgas, this was once an important trading port that served the whole area. From around 1860 onwards it was quicker to transport goods from Cape Town by ship than by ox wagon, and so this river route was a lifeline for the region.

The Sugar Bridge at Buffeljagsrivier, the Trading Post in Suurbraak, the mercantile background which was the foundation of both Barrydale and Infanta , and the important position of Stormsvlei as a refreshment post for the pioneering Trekboers as they carved out new lives for themselves, all of these bear testament to the history of South Africa as it developed through trade and commerce.

Overall, a really fantastic stay at Kwetu. We were met by Jean on arrival, the owner, who briefed us about our chalet and how to find it. She's very enthusiastic about the farm and their game. There are 3 self-catering chalets and small flatlets - we booked one of the chalets which I would recommend. (Flatlets better suited for backpackers, I felt). The chalets are spread out with superb views of the mountains, and the game roams freely on the farm. We watched the sunset in the company of bontebok springbok and wildebeest right on our doorstep - just magical.
The chalets are spacious, simple but elegant. We had everything we needed for a self-catering stay. We enjoyed "Steenbok" as you couldn't see the other two chalets and we were close to a small dam - ideal for a quick dip to cool off. We opted to eat in, but Swellendam is only 7km away if you want to go into town for meals or need to shop.
Highly recommend for nature lovers, families (kids all ages) and couples.

Superb. 5 out of 5
