Area Information:
The village of Clarens lies at the foot of Mount Horeb, on the Free State Highlands Route close to the Golden Gate National Park. One of the most popular holiday towns in the eastern Free State, its location inspires not only its own residents but everyone who stays there.

An easy three to four hours' drive from Johannesburg, Clarens has become the long weekend mecca of those after an arty, sleepy hollow with just enough entertainment not to be dull.

The town that first enjoyed a revival when it became something of an artists' haven during the early nineties is now premium second home property. It helps that it lies in a particularly scenic spot, surrounded by Rooiberge and the Maluti Mountains a little further southeast; its tree-lined streets and enticing restaurants, art galleries and boutique style stores a reason to amble away the weekend in the town's square.

There is no shortage of accommodation in Clarens in the form of guest houses, self-catering establishments, lodges and B&Bs in the area, and nature-loving activities in particular are what attract those who enjoy the great outdoors. There is horse riding, hiking, fly fishing, abseiling, white water rafting and golf. There are caves to visit, San paintings to explore, rocks to climb, and local restaurants offer live music over weekends.

Many of the homes and buildings in Clarens are built using local sandstone, giving them a particular appeal. The Artists' Amble is a route that takes in the local art galleries run by and supplied by local artists. And if none of these activities appeal, lay your hands on a copy of The Speckled Bean, the local community magazine for insider information.

We fell in love with Patcham Place the moment we arrived. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Golden Gate area, with rooms leading onto private balconies, this place is such a treasure. Each spacious room is beautifully decorated in its own style. I loved the charming finishing touch of a carafe of sherry in each room. Of course there are also tea and coffee making facilities, with a range of teas, a chocolate treat and some breakfast biscuits. Speaking of breakfast, I can highly rate the breakfast options. A menu is provided with various check boxes for you to be able to build your own breakfast. One of the lovely options is a cheese platter with fig preserve. The bran muffin is also delicious.
The staff are absolutely lovely and friendly and they went out of their way to make sure that one of our party was well taken care of when she wasn't feeling well. The two slices of toast we asked for were presented neatly wrapped and garnished with a sprig of rosemary.

Very nice and well furnished room. Very close to city center. Very good breakfast. The free coupons for drinks were the cherry on top of the cake.

Peace and quiet at Christmas time. A good Christmas lunch at Gosto restaurant (but beware the R100 cover charge per person). "Eat cheese" for a wonderful breakfast platter. Golden Gate in all its majesty.

It's a quaint little town that knows how to keep tourists happy. Stop in the town square on a weekend for a walk around the market and a cold beer at the brewery.

Clarens is a beautiful quaint little town. It has everything you could possibility need, gorgeous gift shops, restaurants with delicious food and a craft brewery all set in the majestic mountains. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Must visits : The Purple Onion, which is a deli kind of store. Clarens Brewery is a must, the beer & ciders are great and the food menu is limited but fantastic. Also Red Stone Distillery has a great range of gins and there cocktails are also great. The Art Cafe is fantastic restaurant if you have kids, as they have a nice big play area for them and the food is delicious. And there cakes are to die for.

Loved everything about Clarens - people, restaurants, cherry bier (amazing), shops. Only the road to get there was bad with lots of potholes at a stage.
