Thaba Lapeng Mountain Escape derives its name from the local Sotho language which means 'home against the mountain' and offers luxury self-catering accommodation. The farmhouse is situated against a mountain only 12 kilometres from Clarens in the eastern Free State, on the R711 towards Fouriesburg, just before Surrender Hill, and enjoys magnificent panoramic views of the mountain ranges surrounding Clarens and towards Fouriesburg. Clarens itself can also be seen from the house.

The accommodation at Thaba Lapeng consists of 3 self-catering, open-plan chalets which are adjacent to the main house, as well as 2 rooms as part of the main house which provide basic accommodation.

The chalets are all fully self catering on an open-plan basis (kitchen, lounge, dining room and sleeping area are all in one open plan, similar to a bachelor unit), with an en-suite bathroom fitted with a bath, shower and toilet. Each has a built-in braai on its own veranda. All linen and towels are provided, guests only need to bring their own food and toiletries.

The 2 rooms in the main house are each fitted with fully equipped coffee/tea making facilities, with all linen and towels also being provided. Each room is also equipped with an en-suite bathroom with a shower and toilet and also has its own private entrance on the veranda. There are no braai facilities in respect of the rooms.

Complimentary coffee, tea, milk, sugar and rusks are available in the chalets and the rooms upon arrival.

All chalets and rooms have heaters installed, with electric blankets fitted on the beds.

Enjoy the serenity of Thaba Lapeng and the magnificent views from your veranda or the top of the hill behind the house, the latter for a 360-degree clear view of the area, which includes the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho. The farm is situated next to a game farm and is also suitable for bird viewing.

Thaba Lapeng is only 3 hours from Johannesburg, 4 hours from Durban and 2 hours from Bloemfontein and is an ideal stop-over between the northern and southern provinces or on your way to Lesotho, or for staying over when visiting the Clarens/Eastern Free State area, or for attending weddings at one of the nearby wedding venues, or just for relaxing.

Thaba Lapeng is within easy reach of:

- Paragliding launching site (200 metres). Contact Ollie at
- Various wedding venues, i.e Oranje Guest Farm (8 km); Dunelm Guest Farm (6 km); Linwood Guest Farm (6 km); St Fort Country House (7 km)
- Clarens (10 km), well-known for its arts, crafts, handcrafted beer, restaurants, extreme sports activities and golf course
- Fouriesburg (23 km) with its sandstone buildings
- The Caledon border post with Lesotho (8 km from Fouriesburg), from where Afriski Snow and Mountain Resort is only 80 km away
- Golden Gate National Park, only 20 km away
- Ficksburg (70 km) - famous for its annual cherry festival in November
- Rock art: Schaaplaats Farm (16 km) hosts a large painted cave with 35 Bushman rock paintings, which are estimated to be over 2 000 years old
- Various walking/biking/quad biking and 4x4 routes
- Heritage sites:
- Surrender Hill (2 km) where the Free State Boer Commandos surrendered to the British troops on the 31st July 1900
- Fertility caves (10 km) where, in accordance with African religion, Sangomas still hold traditional ceremonies, in particular, an initiation ceremony for young women when getting married to boost their fertility levels. The Caves are known as a sacred place and have been used for over 800 years
- Ash River Outfall (16 km): part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project in terms of which water is delivered via the Trans-Caledon Tunnel from Lesotho’s high altitude dams, under the Maloti mountains, to the Ash River Outfall, which is a popular tourist attraction.

Unique little time capsule - remnants of yesteryear with all the mod cons of modern living and spectacular Mountain settings. Definitely a place to see and experience!

Peace and quiet at Christmas time. A good Christmas lunch at Gosto restaurant (but beware the R100 cover charge per person). "Eat cheese" for a wonderful breakfast platter. Golden Gate in all its majesty.

It's a quaint little town that knows how to keep tourists happy. Stop in the town square on a weekend for a walk around the market and a cold beer at the brewery.

Clarens is a beautiful quaint little town. It has everything you could possibility need, gorgeous gift shops, restaurants with delicious food and a craft brewery all set in the majestic mountains. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Must visits : The Purple Onion, which is a deli kind of store. Clarens Brewery is a must, the beer & ciders are great and the food menu is limited but fantastic. Also Red Stone Distillery has a great range of gins and there cocktails are also great. The Art Cafe is fantastic restaurant if you have kids, as they have a nice big play area for them and the food is delicious. And there cakes are to die for.

Loved everything about Clarens - people, restaurants, cherry bier (amazing), shops. Only the road to get there was bad with lots of potholes at a stage.
