Affordable and comfortable B&B and self-catering accommodation just 10 KM from Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg. We provide free parking and an al-a carte restaurant on site. Our tranquil setting, located near horse riding trails, mountain biking trails, hiking routes, golf courses, trout fishing waters and of course the famous Sani Pass.
We are situated 1,5 hours from Howick on the N3 Route and 1 hour from Kokstad, making Underberg the ideal location from which to explore the majestic mountains of the Southern Drakensberg. We are on the route between Johannesburg and seaside resorts of the South Coast and Wild Coast making this the ideal location to stopover for the night.
We offer bed and breakfast, room only, self-catering and full board options in our various units.
Accommodation / Room Types:
Bed and Breakfast:There are 15 comfortableen-suite rooms that can be set as king or twin beds. All rooms have bathroom/shower facilities, tea/coffee trays and televisions with DStv.
Kingfisher: Three en-suite bedrooms. Two rooms with Queen beds and one room with three single beds. This cottage is a popular choice for families and small groups of couples wanting some time away in the Berg. The kitchen comes fully equipped with all cutlery and crockery. There is a TV in the lounge and in one of the bedrooms
Otters Den: This is a three bedroom self-catering unit. One room is Kingsize with TV and the other two rooms can either be kingsize or twin. One of the other rooms also has a TV . The kitchen is fully equipped.
Fishing cabins: We have 3 of these delightful little cabins that are suitable for couples. Each of them has a bathroom, kitchenette and braai facilities. From the parking area, you walk along the wooden decking and over our gorgeous little waterfall to get to the cabins.

Area Information:Underberg is set in the foothills of the majestic mountains of the Southern Drakensberg. The Old Hatchery is set among dairy farms alongside the uMzimkulu River.
Property Facilities:What to bring:
* Passports (for the trip up Sani Pass).
* Camping chairs (for the Fishing Cabins and for picnics around our dam).
* Fly fishing equipment. Fishing is available, with permit, at numerous river sites nearby, one of them within walking distance.
* Swimming towels.
* Warm clothing - no matter what time of the year - you just never know when it will snow.
Activities in the Area:
* Horse Riding trails at Khotso, which is just next door to us. Enjoy riding over hilltops with stunning views and through forests. Khotso also offer overnight pony treks into Lesotho. You don't have to be an experienced rider to enjoy this adventure.
* River Rafting & Tubing is most enjoyed in the summer months and is conveniently done on the stretch of the Umzimkulu River just in front of The Old Hatchery.
* Trips up Sani Pass go everyday and are led by well informed guides. For this your passport is essential as you will enter into Lesotho to have lunch at the highest pub in Africa at the Sani Top Chalet.
* Sani Spoors offers a choice of 3km, 8km or 35km mountain bike trails over farmlands, alongside the river and through forests just 3km down the road from us you could ride your bike there
* We have 3 lovely Golf courses nearby.
* We have a restaurant on the property should you wish to make reservations for meals.
* Hiking trails available at a choice of Nature Reserves in the vicinity.
* Guided rock art tours can be arranged for you
* Over 300 bird species in the region including the endangered Cape Parrot (Marutswa Forest in Bulwer)

We really enjoyed our stay at Old Hatchery.
People are very friendly and accommodating especially the lady at the reception.
Room very spacious and comfortable. Restaurant food was delicious.
Location was great, and the management was very friendly. The restaurant was better then we expected and we were happy with the visit.

Beautiful Scenery. The food was amazing. Try their Rainbow trout! The accommodation was adequate. Will recommend it as a place to stay.

Small, Quiet, not a lot of people, and the most breath taking scenery in the country.
The Golf Club supplies fantastic meals for really good prices.
A favourite place, well placed for travel from Durban.
