The Historic Pig and Whistle Inn was built in 1821 by a British Settler Thomas Hartley. It was originally used as a forge but after a while the settler realized he could make more money running an Inn and selling passing tradesmen beer. The Inn was up and running by 1832 and was aptly named The Bathurst Inn. In 1840 after Mr Hartley died his wife Sarah kept the Inn going and made it famous throughout the Cape. Years later during the Second World War the Royal Airforce developed a base in the area ( now known as 43 Air School) It was during this time that the homesick pilots began calling the Inn, The Pig and Whistle , which was the name of their local watering hole back home. Years later still the Inn is still up and running in full force. Many of the rooms have been redone but still retain their settler charm as they are furnished with all the old antiques past down through generations of the Inn's owners.
