Barkly West boasts a number of firsts in South Africa, including the first Anglican church north on the Vaal River (1871), the first bridge built over the Vaal river, and the first alluvial diamond discovery. The site of the first diamond diggings in Africa is now a national monument.
Barkly West stands on the Vaal River close to the fording place called Klip Drift. It is over-looked by Canteen Koppie, a hillock that has signs of occupation going back to prehistoric times. Numerous artifacts left by early inhabitants have been found here.
Barkly West was the site of the first major diamond rush, in 1870, on the South African Diamond Fields, and was initially known as Klip Drift. This Dutch name means “stony ford” and is a direct translation from a much older !Kora or Korana name, Ka-aub (or !a |aub) – “stony (place along a) river”.

Visiting Mattanu Private Game Reserve was a new and very different experience! Antelope, like we have never seen before and with a guide whose knowledge of these and other wild animals made our time there, interesting, fascinating and educational and the location for sundowners was a treat! The hospitality, food and attention to detail completed our stay at Mattanu.
The all-inclusive package is so worth it. Food was excellent and we learned a lot about different antelope on the game drives. 1 night was too short.
We had a very excellent stay, we did enjoy our stay, the friendly staff, the delicious meals, clean facilities. Everything was set up, we are definitely going to visit again.
It is a privilege to spend time at Mattanu, lovely venue and accommodation and food, such very well informed and interesting hosts and employees - would love to return another day!
Awesome experience, the professionalism of all the staff there is beyond measure. Everything is well organised. The warm swimming pool is exquisite. We enjoyed the spa massages, the game drive as well as the well prepared 3 course dinner.
This place is awesome. The staff is friendly and warm. Elray and Estian is very informed about the farm and its animal. We felt very welcome and they made us so comfortable since the time we arrived until we left. I would recommend Mattanu to anyone and would go back there anytime. Its awesome just to relax and get rid of stress. I really really love the place.
Really enjoyed our stay at this lovely game reserve. Accommodation was spacious, spotless and very well equipped. Staff looked after us very well and were friendly and helpful. Excellent sunset game drive. Would highly recommend Mattanu and hope to visit again.
I took my girlfriend here on her birthday weekend. We booked into the luxury tents on Friday night(including dinner), and went for a game drive on Friday morning. We were treated with a fine breakfast after the game drive. The tents are air conditioned, with a Fridge and complimentary wine. Our overall experience was exceptional
Lovely place enjoyed every minute of it especially game drives. The drive was divine got to see a snake shed its skin off just as i was about to reach the entrance....... the staff nd owners are very welcoming..... oooooooooooohhhh the pool amazing. Very close interaction with the animals.... accommodation enjoyed thr tent felt more luxurious than most 5 star hotels...... looking foward to coming back
