If you love being near nature, close to the mountains, enjoy peace and tranquility and don't mind the fact that you have no cellphone reception or TV then you will just love Kouga Wilderness (KW). The gravel road from the R62 to KW is fairly rough in places and it would be best to have a SUV or Double Cab although some folk have used ordinary passenger vehicles, which I would not advise. Our host Melodie Ferreira was very friendly and welcomed us upon our arrival at the farm house and gave us a detailed run down on all that we needed to know and directions on how to get to our chalet. We booked the Heuningkrans Chalet for the weekend which has a beautiful view of the Krans and one can hear the gentle bubbling of the river that runs at the base of the Krans. Accommodation is rustic and there are no frills but the chalet is adequately equipped and it was clean and tidy. We did not find the bed comfortable and the fridge was quite noisy but we had a fantastic stay. Oh yes cupboard space for clothing is virtually non existent but we lived out of our suite cases and as it was only my wife and I we used the bed in the spare room to house our suite cases and other personal effects. We just loved sitting out on the verandah on the couch enjoying the view and listening to the sound of the birds. There is also a lovely built in braai at the end of the verandah and wood can be bought on site. About 400 meters past the chalet is the Bush Camp and there were folk camped there but movement past the chalet was minimal and not a problem. There are a number of walks and hikes that one can do and there is a "swimming hole" about 50 meters from the chalet but it is not easy getting in and out. We did however use the swimming pool at the boma which is great especially for cooling off on a hot day. You can walk to the pool, which is about 500m from the chalet, but we chose to drive around as it was a pretty hot day. About 300 meters before our Chalet is the River Chalet which looked to be very similar in size and layout although the braai on the verandah was a free standing jet master type braai which was not as big as our braai but looked to be very adequate. This chalet was situated in such a way so as to make it a little more private and there would be no passing people or vehicles. It was closer to the river and there was a swimming hole directly in front of the chalet. There were less trees around this chalet which meant it got a lot of sun and I guess would be much hotter in summer, maybe a better choice for the cooler months.
We really enjoyed our stay and would be happy to recommend to all nature lovers.
