Gentle Presence is one of the oldest sandstone homes in Clarens built in the 1900's. It is thought to have been the stables of a larger farm where farmers gathered for Nagmaal (Holy Communion). Due to the exceptional views of the Rooiberge (including Mt Horeb) and the Malutis, the home was originally given the name Kyk Die Berge in the 1960’s. At the time it was the only multi-storey structure in Clarens and the locals affectionately called it “Die Flets”. It has a charming history which we would love to share with you.

Property Facilities:
The garden is large which guests are welcome to use.

The covered patio has a large table and chairs where guests can make use of the gas braai or just enjoy the views of the garden and mountains.

Parking is behind locked gates and motorcycles are welcome.

Cleaning, washing and ironing can be arranged on request.

Area Information:
Clarens is a small village situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State province of South Africa and nicknamed the "Jewel of the Eastern Free State". The village lies at the foot of Mount Horeb and is on he Free State Highlands Route close to the Golden Gate National Park.

Being an easy 3 to 4 hour drive from JHB or Durban is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the eastern Free State. The area appeals to young and old with many activities such as white river rafting, abseiling, hot air ballooning, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, quad biking, horse riding, game drives, tours to cultural villages and into Lesotho. It is also a great base from which to explore the area and the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

Clarens has become the long weekend mecca of those after an arty, sleepy hollow with just enough entertainment not to be dull.

In Room Facilities:
The cottage has an open plan living area, a kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2,5 bathrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering with fridge/freezer combo, 4 plate gas stove with gas oven, microwave, toaster, etc. Limited tea, coffee, dish clothes and cleaning materials supplied. The living area is comfortably furnished. There is a TV with full DSTV and a large dining room table where you can enjoy meals or play games. The bedrooms have quality linen, electric blankets and heaters. The 2 single beds can be converted into a king size bed and the other room is standard queen bed.

Unique little time capsule - remnants of yesteryear with all the mod cons of modern living and spectacular Mountain settings. Definitely a place to see and experience!

Peace and quiet at Christmas time. A good Christmas lunch at Gosto restaurant (but beware the R100 cover charge per person). "Eat cheese" for a wonderful breakfast platter. Golden Gate in all its majesty.

It's a quaint little town that knows how to keep tourists happy. Stop in the town square on a weekend for a walk around the market and a cold beer at the brewery.

Clarens is a beautiful quaint little town. It has everything you could possibility need, gorgeous gift shops, restaurants with delicious food and a craft brewery all set in the majestic mountains. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Must visits : The Purple Onion, which is a deli kind of store. Clarens Brewery is a must, the beer & ciders are great and the food menu is limited but fantastic. Also Red Stone Distillery has a great range of gins and there cocktails are also great. The Art Cafe is fantastic restaurant if you have kids, as they have a nice big play area for them and the food is delicious. And there cakes are to die for.

Loved everything about Clarens - people, restaurants, cherry bier (amazing), shops. Only the road to get there was bad with lots of potholes at a stage.
