THE CAPE ST FRANCIS
The Cape St Francis Lighthouse marks one of the 'corners' of the African Coast. It was erected to warn ships of the presence of reefs that protrude beyond Sea Point and almost a kilometre out to sea. Southern Africa's continental Shelf is as it?s most narrow off Cape St Francis. Navigators prefer to follow the Continental Shelf so to make best use of the Agulhas Current. This brings the ships close in shore, and has resulted in a number of wrecks along our occasionally hostile coast.
THE SAND RIVER DUNES
A hike along the Sand River is to be recommended at any time off the year. And, if you?re lucky, you'll see the famously beautiful Crystal Pools. The water in the Sand River system flows mostly underground and over the hard rocky substrate that underlines the dunes, but after heavy rains, the water table rises to form Crystal Pools. The Sand River abounds with Archaeological artefacts, and hikers should be careful not to disturb any of them.
THE CAPE ST FRANCIS LIGHTHOUSE
Before St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis were developed, the Cape St Francis beacon was considered to be the loneliest lighthouse on the African mainland and was reachable only by ox wagon or on horseback. Today, however, it is a National Monument that is easily accessed by car or on foot. It is open to public daily.
KOUGA - BIRTHPLACE OF MODERN MAN
The Kouga region is said to be the birth place of Modern man. The earliest records of Homo sapiens are to be found at the Klasies River Cave, a few kilometres west of the Tsitsikamma River mouth. These 120 000 year-old remains are more than 60 000 years older than those examples of Neanderthal Man that have been found in Europe!
ECO BOAT CRUISES
Kromme River Expeditions will take you for a cruise out of the Harbour and around the Bay. You'll discover abundant bird and marine mammal life - including penguins, whales and dolphins (in terms of the Boat-based Whale Watching regulations, this is a declared 'closed' area, and our craft may thus not approach closer than 300 meters of any whales)
Explore the upper reaches of the Kromme River on our comfortable motor launch. Stop over at the Stony Boma River Camp for a picnic or braai. Relax after lunch or go for a hike, canoeing, fishing or birding on the river. Daily Departures.

the Cape St. Francis Resort. A walk through the Reserve is a must-do for all lovers of fynbos. Maps and plant guides are available.
