We were road tripping along the South African coast from Cape Town to Durban and could not turn down the chance to go on a safari. Our time was very limited and the cost to go to Lalibela for only 1 night was great, but because the rest of our trip was on a budget, we took a leap of faith and decided to splurge on 1 night in the Tree Tops.
It did not disappoint.
About 1 hour from Port Elizabeth, we found Lalibela easily and entered the reserve without difficulty. We were instantly greeted and given a run down of the expectations. Our vehicle was left in the main lot and then we were escorted to our Tree Tops home for the night. I really appreciate how well organized this whole experience was, I felt like they worked really hard to ensure we make the most of our time.
Our Tree Tops room was breathtaking to say the least. It was like glamping on a new level. The bed was amazingly cozy and the amenities were fantastic. The structure was made of canvas, but there were heated blankets to help stay warm through the cool nights. Upon arrival we were greeted with tasty beverages and a delicious meal before the evening safari. Dinner also exceeded our expectations. We had a fantastic group of people staying in the Tree Tops with us, which made the experience even more wonderful.
Rudy was our guide and gave us not only an enriching safari experience, but opened up our minds on another level about South African culture. He was the highlight of our time at Lalibela and we absolutely adored him. The rest of the staff here are impressive and accommodating. Even prior to the stay, the electronic communications were prompt, welcoming and very helpful. It made me feel very at ease about staying here.
The safari was fantastic. During our short stay, we got 2 game rides and saw 4 of the Big 5 (the darn leopard was so elusive). For our quick trip, we got everything we wanted and more. Thank you so much Lalibela for this life changing memories!
Travel Exculsively African arranged this Safari a lovely location. The accommodation , staff , food and service was first class. The ranger was so informative and it was great to see the big 5 just roaming around in there own environment. Can highly recommend staying at Tree Tops. A fantastic 3 Night stay just perfect.
We stayed at Kichaka Lodge for three nights and wish it was for longer. What a wonderful place to stay.
A very informative orientation of the lodge and information on what and when things happen, then straight into a light lunch. Time to unpack in our truly magical suite. It comes complete with huge terrace with our very own pool, overlooking a waterhole, where we saw several groups of animals come down to drink. Rest. Then gather in the main lodge for tea of quiche, cake and fruit. We then went on our first game drive. We were lucky to see many animals on our first day, which ended with gin & tonic sundowners, before heading back. We were met with hot spiced wine (we were very chilly by now) and then into a delicious dinner. A 5o/c wake up call, coffee, muffin and fruit and then on our morning game drive. Wonderful again. An excellent breakfast and another day begins. We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, water buffalo, zebra, a young cheetah with a kill of a fully grown impala , rhino, gazelle, hippos and many more. Our ranger, Rayno was so knowledgable and informative, he looked after us very well and really made our trip the success it was.
We were lucky enough to be the only guests at Treetops Lodge when we visited for two days at the beginning of April. This also meant we had our own ranger, Peter, which was very special.
Having never done a safari before this, we have nothing to compare our experience to, but we can't imagine how it could be any better. The accommodation is very comfortable with incredible views from the balcony. The only issue we had with our rented lodge was with a bat, which crept into our room to stock up for hibernation on the bugs there during the night! Even though we knew it wouldn't hurt us, we preferred to hang some blankets around the bed to protect ourselves! Apparently this only happens during a small window of time before the winter and the management are looking into sealing the gaps around the roof where they can get through.
The food was excellent with plenty of choice and we were very well looked after. We even had hot water bottles and blankets for our morning game drives!
The game drives were all excellent. Considering his young age, Peter astounded us with his knowledge and confidence as a ranger. We saw everything except a leopard (which is notoriously difficult to find during the day) and had some incredible experiences. A highlight was witnessing an interaction between four lions and a herd of elephants! Something we’ll never forget.
There are plenty of animals and they are free to roam in a natural environment. The rangers can drive off-road to get up close to the wildlife. There were probably 4 cars out at a time and the rangers speak to each other so you don't miss out on good sightings.
For our first safari, we were thoroughly spoilt and we can't recommend Lalibela enough.
We stayed at Lalibela in the Treetops lodge for 2 nights, and did 4 game drives. Our guide Regard, or Peter as likes to be called was extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife and the ecosystem it lives in. He made our visit an unforgettable experience.
Lalibela’s lovely owner, Caroline, who we also briefly met is very committed to returning the farm to the original African ecology, and at the same time making an unforgettable experience for the visitors.
The accommodation in Treetops was very spacious, and decorated with love for details. We visited in April, so it was already a little chilly in the tent-like rooms.
Our experience was very similar to the last review, apart from the bat!
We were positive about every aspect of our stayand Peter was the star of the two days. However, everyone was outstanding and made the stay as enjoyable as it could have been.
We were so lucky to be able to meet and dine with Caroline and Amre, the owners of the reserve. They have so much passion about Lalibela and superb vision. We will definitely revisit Tree Tops.
Thank you all and good luck.
We stayed at Lalibela Lentaba lodge for 3 nights at the end of our trip to SA. From the moment we arrived the whole experience was flawless. The lodge was intimate only having a max of 20 guests, the staff couldn’t do enough for us. The rooms were immaculate and beautifully appointed. Rohan (sorry if I’ve misspelt it!), our ranger was amazing, we saw Elephant, Rhino, lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, mongoose, jackals, hippo and more! Rohan made each drive different and was incredibly knowledgable. Special mention as well to Tim our barman, you couldn’t wish for a better compliment than our 13 year old left in his guest feedback “Tim made us feel like family”, that really sums us the way we all felt about the whole experience. I would totally recommend Lalibela for anyone thinking about the experience of a lifetime. Cheers all!
We started at Treetops Lodge, and everything was simply superb: the staff, the food, the facilities, etc. Of course, the game drives were amazing, and we sighted everything except for a leopard.
Highly recommend a stay at Treetop Lodge, where you get visited by Nyalas and even elephants within the camp! However, rather plan your stay for spring/summer, as it gets very cold there in autumn.
Although I rate it as Excellent, there is room for improvement regarding their wine selection.
Thank you to Renee, Righardt, Dumisani, and the rest of the staff for making our stay a truly unforgettable one!
My husband booked this trip, partly based on value for money, and I had some concerns.... COMPLETELY UNFOUNDED!!!! It was superb and completely surpassed my expectations in every way.
I have previously been on safari in Kenya and although Lalibella is obviously a lot smaller it is perfectly formed.
The staff and service were exceptional with a relaxed and happy atmosphere prevailing. The level of knowledge and commitment to conservation shown by the rangers was outstanding and led to some fabulous discussions around the dinner table. The food, wine and rooms were luxurious and comfortable, I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Thank you Lalibella
The place is amazing, hectares of lush vegetation and free roaming animals, very easily accessible from the main road (N2). The food was abundant and excellent, the team of cooks prepared four meals a day and always gave us very tasty and original dishes. The safari experience with Rudy was intriguing, educative and, most of all, fun. We managed to see ALL the big 5 (yes, all of them, even the shy leopard, which had never been seen by tourists at Lalibela, we were told, and had been seen by rangers only two years before), plus dozens of other animals (hippo, giraffe, zebra, warthog, meerkat, brown hyena, jackal, impala, blesbuck, reedbuck). The friendliness of the staff and cleanliness of the facilities were top notch.
