In creating Bundox Explorer Camp on a private concession of the Olifants West section of the Greater Kruger’s Balule Game Reserve, we addressed the questions of what makes a great safari great and what you really need when staying in the bush.
The answers speak for themselves… You need somewhere comfortable to sleep and tend to the daily functions of existence, good food, a place to relax and unwind, a method of cooling off in the summer heat, awesome views and excellent game viewing in a wilderness environment, and, finally, an amazing team of people to make you feel at home.
Located in the Olifants West Nature Reserve, this Big Five territory is where guests will enjoy both game drives and guided walking trails through rugged Lowveld terrain and along the Olifants River.
In Room Facilities:There are no hard and fast rules that define luxury when it comes to safari experiences. For us luxury comes in the form of uncomplicated, effortless surroundings that make you feel part of wild Africa rather than separated from it. Bundox Explorer Camp is a lesson in simplicity and its four double tents take their inspiration from a bygone era when less was definitely more.
Each has twin beds with sprung bases and comfortable divan-style mattresses, dressed in cool cotton sheets and lightweight duvets. Additional blankets are kept in a wooden kist for the cooler months and crisp winter nights. The camp is off-grid with a solar system that provides power in each tent, enabling you to recharge your devices and camera batteries as needed. A fan provides the perfect cooling breeze whenever you need it.
The en-suite bathrooms include a flushing toilet, single vanity unit with a basin and a shower with running cold water. Hot water is available on demand and is run through a bucket shower system that’s both effective and wonderfully sustainable.
Mosquito flaps allow the tents to remain secure but airy, providing good ventilation in the warmer months. There is insect repellant and bug spray in each room, as well as packing and hanging space for clothing. Outside there is a small deck with comfortable chairs and views of the camp.
The result is the perfect combination of comfort, practical, clean design and functionality that’s also easy on the eye. What more could you wish for?
Area Information:Staying at Bundox Explorer Camp is as much an adventure as exploring the wonderful wilderness of the Olifants West region of the Balule. Blending perfectly into its location on the top of a hill overlooking the breathtaking South African Lowveld and distant Northern Drakensberg Escarpment, the accent is on immersing you in an African adventure and releasing you from the stress of everyday life.
With a small team of enthusiastic staff dedicated to helping create exceptional safari experiences, every effort is made to produce safari perfection, from the wonderful home-cooked meals prepared in the open kitchen and dining room to the help-yourself honesty bar in the lounge area of the raised viewing deck.
It’s small, intimate and absolutely fabulous, and upholds the adage that great things come in small packages!

Bundox was great. Both the camp was beautiful, the beds slept wonderfully, the environment is super beautiful and the staff is very helpful, knowledgeable and provides a great experience. The meals were delicious, healthy and varied. The morning and evening safaris were beautiful and there are many special animals in the area, which sometimes require a bit of luck (only the black rhinoceros we have not been able to find). Definitely worth the money and highly recommended for a Safari in the greater Kruger.
Super wild experience!! A real taste of Kruger Park! The staff is amazing, super kind and helpful, they do their job with real passion! The kitchen is delicious and the game drives are just perfect!! Highly recommended!
An unforgettable wild experience, a tasting of life in the bush. The tent was super clean, the staff took care of us and the food was healthy and super delicious! The game drives were real adventures, we’ve seen so many animals in their natural habitat. It was fun to follow the animals tracks. We really had a great time and we enjoyed every moment
Best memory of our stay in South Africa! 4 days of immersion in contact with animals thanks to a great team of young people! Sensations, fun and exceptional cuisine guaranteed! Adventure lovers and animators, you will not be disappointed! Blanchard Family
Very Special Place A last minute booking at this full board Eco camp turned into an absolute treat of a weekend! The Team were incredible and couldn’t do enough to be welcoming and thoughtful. In no time we felt like we had known them for years! There is a quality rustic chic feel throughout the private and public spaces, good solar lighting, and the “on demand” bucket showers were a novel experience (thank you Cullen for filling up our water reservoirs with hot water at our beck and call so that, except for the water pressure, we could hardly tell the difference between these and home showers!). Well appointed and super clean tents with carpeted flooring and excellent white linen made for cosy sleeps. The game viewing was up close and personal, including elephant and nyala grazing at the small water hole a few metres from the camp’s pool deck (which btw also affords magnificent sunset views, should one find oneself in camp at this time). Our experienced and highly knowledgeable ranger (JD) and tracker (Cullen) were not only entertaining beyond expectation, but were passionately determined to find Lion and Wild Dogs, and we had the incredible experience of following the latter pack of 7 for over 30 mins along the boundary line. Thank you Team for the hot hand towels on arrival, the abundant meals, surprise sundowner bush setup complete with chairs and white clothed table of snacks and drinks, the boma fires, self cooking potjie “competition”, and mainly just for blessing us with your genuine caring and humanity. Overall, a very special intimate “low impact” bush experience with luxury treatment that can’t be beaten in value for money. Don’t hesitate, just book now!
"From the moment we made the booking I knew we would have a wonderful time. Lene was available to assist me with all my enquiries. The accommodation was excellent and we were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived at the gate. Thank you for a wonderful time! We experienced kindness, helpfulness and only have high praise for all the staff. The game drives were informative and we had excellent sightings. Thank you, John, Micha, Cullen, Simanga and Nicky. We will definitely recommend Bundox Safari Lodge and would love to return."
We stayed over for 2 nights and had a great time. The campsite blends into the surroundings. The tents were very comfortable and warm in the middle of winter. We were very well hosted and the food provided was excellent. Regarding COVID, all protocols were followed and there was an ample supply of disinfectants.
Due to Covid and its restrictions we decided to go to the Bundox Explorer Camp with a small group of family members for our 1 year wedding anniversary.
Wow what an experience, the camp is immaculate with 4 x 2 bed luxury tents. A fully equipped kitchen and dining area , boma and plunge pool and relaxing area.
Fantastic view .
I had the exciting experience of lions roaring at night and actually found 6 lions the next day right near the camp.
The staff was very professional and the game drives exciting.
This is a real gem

Hoedspruit Reviews
Beautiful and Clean, pity a place like Mali Mali can upset a persons Holiday... an event that was meant to be legendary! Mali Mali is not as per there website... they manipulate the internet!
The nature.
Morokologa game reserve, we spend our Christmas at the camp and we had a beautiful game drive and morning walks with my grandmother. Played games and reconnected as a family.
Most of Gold cabins- the weather - the sound of the birds-
Since we have family and old colleagues in Hoedspruit we enjoy everything. Love going to Hoedspruit for a weekend break away.
The quietness.
It’s a beautiful town which is easily accessible and has all the convenient shopping around the lodges nearby and one is able to do various activities around the area.
Privacy!
The town is very small yet beautiful and neat. It has lots of tourist attractions and good place to visit, just to unwind!
