As far as rustic weekend getaways go, Bonnievale Accommodation @ Merwespont is the last of a dying breed – a place where not even Triple-X Gel can keep the hair up.
It’s the oldest getaway in Bonnievale, dating back to 1968 when the Milnerton Jewish Guild sold what was then an old school building to one Laubscher van der Merwe for R400. Merwespont is a beautiful wedding location for the rustic feels.

While Die Houthuis is the obvious first choice, there's now a second as-relaxed option available, called A Snoozer's Cottage. The latter abode lies 200m away from the river, but comes with its own jetty and picnic and braai area on the water, plus canoes, tractor tubes, and Tarzan swing.

Snoozer's offers a casual stay for six adults and/or a child or two, plus there are outside 'Budget Rooms' to handle your party overflow. The decor is a mix and match of the old and less old and the architecture pretty basic. The house adjoins your friendly host Ronelle's home, but Ronelle reassures us this ain't an issue.

In Room Facilities:

* TV
* DStv
* Desk
* Fireplace
* Kitchen with microwave, refrigerator, stove etc..
* Non smoking

* Sitting area

Area Information:

Bonnievale is a beautiful community that is perfectly suited for relaxation and comfort. The small farming town is tucked between two mountain ranges, the Riviersonderend and the Langeberg mountains, and the lush green fields are fed by the Breede River and a series of canals. The land is fertile and soft, producing beautiful fruit, wines, and dairy. This peaceful area calls back to a simpler time and is a perfect getaway destination for anyone who needs a break from busy city life. Just 180 kilometers from Cape Town you can take a quick, relaxing weekend break to prepare you and restore you for the week ahead.

The well-known Robertson Wine Route includes Bonnievale so you can stop in if you’re following that route. We hope that you might choose to stay a little longer to fully take in all that Bonnievale has to offer as you stay in some charming, special Bonnievale accomodations. It’s also located right off of Route 62 if you’re headed in from another direction. This charming oasis is a little less known than other tourist hot-spots so you’ll get a more down-home, quaint feel and get more personal attention with the locals. You can’t beat the superior customer service and charm that Bonnievale has, especially compared to some other overcrowded sites and stays.

Property Facilities:

The kitchen is neat and fully equipped with a stove, fridge and microwave.

Stepping outside Die Houthuis, you’ll find a braai area, an unsinkable Tupperware canoe or two, tractor tubes, a raft and a foefie slide draped across the river. The latter was erected in 1980 by a Mr O’ Connel and his family – even their 72-year-old gran took a ride to mark the auspicious occasion.

Starting to get a sense of what Die Houthuis is all about? Good. As long as personal space and modcons aren’t high on your agenda, you’ll love it.

Attractions:

* Van Loveren Family Wines
* Viljoensdrift
* Montagu Museum
* Platform 62 - Wine Experience
* Rietvallei Wine Estate

We enjoyed lunch at Viljoensdrift and Catharinas and also having dinner on the private patio watching the sun set over the mountains. The King size bed was super comfortable and the large fenced garden made it very private for us and our scotty dogs.
