The West Coast of South Africa is the perfect location for your next family trip, with nature and the essence of creation being embodied in these shores. Renowned for breathtaking beauty and unparalleled sights, the West Coast is an unspoilt paradise, boasting clean air, tranquility and never-ending adventure. From the rugged mountainous terrains to the white sandy beaches, the West Coast is colourful, vibrant and scenic. A visit during the 'flower season' is very rewarding as some of the country's most rare wild flowers are on display in all their glory.
The town of Veldrrif, which includes Laaiplek, Noordhoek, Port Owen and Dwarskersbos, is 90 minutes out of Cape Town, but despite it being remote, the town has become a haven for visitors to retreat to, away from the chaos of the bigger cities. Located on the banks of the Berg River estuary, Velddrif's name comes from a farming family, Smit, who drove their sheep through the "drift in the veld" across the Berg River in search of better grazing. Laaiplek - originally Rooibaai - finds the origins of its name in the abundance of fishing and other agricultural products the region has been blessed with. Attractions here include boating and fishing in St Helena Bay, doing whale and seal spotting at Rocherpan Nature Reserve, or heading over to the West Coast Gallery to explore the fine works of local artists.
During your visit to Velddrif, the only place to stay is the Laaiplek Hotel. Situated on the Berg River in Laaiplek, west of Velddrif, Laaiplek Hotel offers leisurely accommodation for the visiting traveller.
