25 natural stone chalets with air conditioning, en suite bathroom and thatched roofs, nestle between massive granite boulders and convey a sense of living in the lap of nature.
In Room Facilities:The en-suite rooms, have twin beds and their own veranda. While our family rooms have double beds and twin beds and also include a veranda. All rooms have air-conditioning.
Area Information:The Nama Karoo - yellow flowers of quiver trees against the blue sky at the second largest canyon on earth. The quiver tree is a typical stem succulent of the Nama Karoo, and on the vast plains of Gondwana Canyon park several clusters can be found. With an area of 1,120 square km and the first tract of land aquired in 1995, this park is the largest and oldest nature reserve of the Gondwana Desert Collection.
Property Facilities:The central lodge area offers a restaurant and a bar area, decorated with interesting items from the yesteryear. We offer sundowner / morning drives through the Canon Park or a drive down to the Canyon Fish River viewpoint. There are horse rides and also great signposted walking trails for hiking enthusiasts.
Attractions:Canyon Lodge in Gondwana Canyon Park is just 20 km away from the Fish River Canyon. Its dimensions are enormous: 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and 500 m deep. The Fish River Canyon is seen as the largest canyon in Africa and second largest canyon on earth - after the Grand Canyon in the US. Just as impressive is the period of time during which it was formed: 350 million years ago a fault with a width of 20 km appeared and the river meandered through it in wide loops. When the ancient continent of Gondwana disintegrated 120 million years ago, the Fish River started to dig deep into the ground and create its system of gorges.
Reviews
Dit was n uitstekende ervaring.
We were delighted to find that our accommodation at Canon Lodge was so incredible. We felt like the Flintstones in our cave chalet!
The food was stunning and the service made us feel like long-lost friends.
A destination to return to.
A beautiful hobbit like house ticked into the rocky outcrop. A delight. The Lodge is situated ideally for the Fish River canyon and unspoilt, being miles from anywhere - perfect for me but some may find it too quiet ie shopaholics. Good food (though not cheap from a South African point of view - should offer Dinner, bed and breakfast as no other options/competition around), pleasant staff and a pefect little breakaway place. A few of the rooms are not built into the rocks as you see on the internet which disappointed some German visitors.
OuR stay at the Canon Lodge was absolutely stunning!!!! We were actually sorry that we did not stay for an additional night. We will definitely visit again and will refer the lodge to our friends. What a tranquil environment.
Very nice place, will stay there anytime!!!
