Antbear Lodge is situated in the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal near to Giants Castle. What makes our lodge particularly special is that we offer accommodation in a luxury cave. This is an accommodation unit built under a rock. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a spectacular view of the Drakensberg Mountains. This is a luxury eco experience. The cave is cozy and comfortable with features like a Jacuzzi spa bath and a fireplace and even has rock art on its walls.

We also offer a private dining experience where we setup a table on the deck of your cave and you dine by candlelight under the stars.

Antbear Lodge is one of those smaller owner run establishments with 15 accommodation units as either Mountain View suites or Garden view suites.

We also offer pet friendly alternatives

Sustainability and responsible tourism are a huge part of the ethos of our lodge and we subscribe as much as possible to the farm to plate concept. We cook all our meals from scratch and have our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk and bake our own bread and we even make our own cheese.

Antbear Lodge also offers horse trails ideally suited to beginners. Hot air balloon flights that launch from the lawn in front of the lodge and our newest attraction is our star gazing hammock camp where we tell the Zulu stories of the stars.

The area offers a lot with spectacular hiking trails with dramatic views and waterfalls. And then there is the spectacular bushman rock art where you can see some of the best examples in the world.

Attractions:

The activities in the Drakensberg Mountains offer a lot of variety so you will need to make some choices here. Your walking trail or hiking trail can be selected depending on how far you would like to walk. Our suggestion is Giants Castle which offers some of the most dramatic hiking trails and views in the Drakensberg Mountains. And this is probably the main reason you have traveled to this area.

Bushmen rock art is one of the favorite activities in the Drakensberg Mountains. Rock art can be seen in the countless caves and overhangs in the Drakensberg. By far the best bushman rock art available to tourists is found at Game Pass Shelter at Kamberg Nature Reserve. And finally its an easy walk and an experience you will remember as a highlight of your trip.

Midlands Meander offers a treasure trove of country arts and craft shops, cheeseries, wine tasting and much more. Take your time guided by a Midlands Meander map and slowly wind your your way through the country lanes to explore, idle, browse, shop and indulge. A highlight is a vist to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site

The Battlefields tourism region of KwaZulu-Natal stretches north from Estcourt to the border with Mpumalanga. This region contains the greatest number of battlefields and historical sites in South Africa.

White water rafting is available on the Bushmans and Tugela Rivers. First of all, rafting tips are dependent on water levels so the white water rafting season is limited from November through to April. The summer rains in the upper Drakensberg catchment turn the Tugela River into an particularly exciting stretch of white water.

Another of the superb activities in the Drakensberg is game viewing. From rhino tracking in the Spionkop Game Reserve to private safari game drives in Zulu Waters Private Game Reserve and Nambiti Game Reserve.

The Drakensberg and Natal Midlands boast a number of golf courses some of which are world class. So if you are a golf lover this region offers a lot of golfing options.

Canopy tours are one of the best adventure activities in the Drakensberg region. The canopy tour adventures involve sliding from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30m above the forest floor. This is a family fun filled day, a soft adventure for anyone between 7 and 70. There are 2 canopy tours operated in the region one in the Drakensberg in the Champagne Valley and one in the Natal Midlands at Karkloof.

Wellness spas are another of the popular activities in the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands regions. Consequently a number of excellent wellness spas offer a wide range of world-class wellness treatments for ladies and gents. Where else can you enjoy a pampering massage with magnificent countryside views.

4×4 trails are also exciting activities in the Drakensberg region. Take a scenic drive up Mike’s Pass at Cathedral Peak. A 4×4 is required. Or take a trip down to Himeville and venture up the Sani Pass. Remember you need your passport and the Sani Pass requires a 4×4.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir plays to an auditorium filled to capacity on most Wednesdays during the year. This is a sublime experience of the highest quality and if you have a passion for choir music do not miss this opportunity.

Hot air ballooning is one of the highlighted activities in the Drakensberg. Because there are few regions in the world that offer as spectacular a scene for hot air ballooning than these mountains. Whats more there is a number of hot air balloon operators in the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands. Andrew from Antbear Lodge who has a small hot air balloon and although he does not fly commercially you might be able to arrange a flight with him too. m

Tourists can be thrilled by the Drakensberg which is renowned as one of the most picturesque and exciting places to fly in South Africa. Helicopter flips are one of the best flying activities in the Drakensberg. The scenery is awe-inspiring and this is an experience never to be forgotten. You may even land on the little Berg and enjoy a picnic complete with champagne before continuing your flight and returning to base

Hlatikulu Crane and Wetland Sanctuary is a breeding, rehabilitation and rescue center for all three of the Southern African Crane Species. Furthermore the Crane Sanctuary hosts all three species in wild and captive situations. Take a guided tour around the Hlatikulu Crane Sanctuary. And best of all it’s free but donations are accepted thankfully.

Falcon Ridge is home to a wide variety of raptors. Some of the birds of prey have been rehabilitated after suffering from injuries. Daily shows begin at 10.30 am (except Fridays) See these magnificent birds fly and feed off the wing.

Wagondrift dam and Moor park are two small nature reserves that offer great picnic opportunities and short hiking trails. Furthermore people are attracted to the game viewing and fishing options here. And Moor Park is also famous for its bird life including a pair of nesting black eagles.

Keen mountain bikers become excited exploring the Drakensberg terrain. The Drakensberg foothills offer gentle gradients with spectacular scenery. Antbear Lodge has a 10 km marked mountain bike trail that is accessible for all abilities. So bring your own mountain bikes.

The Drakensberg is famous for its divers birding experiences. One of the most famous attractions is the Lammergeier hide at Giants Castle. Some of the Drakensberg special sightings include the rock jumper and Drakensberg Siskin.

Visit the Eskom Hydro Electric Scheme in the Northern Drakensberg. Guided tours begin at the Drakensberg Visitors Center with a presentation providing you with an introduction to Eskom. In conclusion the presentation is followed by a tour of the operational function of the power station. An exhibition and brochures provide further information.

If quad bike trails are one of the activities in the Drakensberg that excites you well then we probably something especially interesting for you. There are few providers that offer quad bike trails. And there are great quad bike options for kids too. Let these quad bike adventures excite you.
