The Montagu Country Hotel, situated in South Africa’s dried fruit capital and center of the famous Route 62, is the only original Art Deco hotel in the country that has been welcoming visitors through her iconic stained-glass doors since 1875.

The hotel has 29 individually furnished en-suite bedrooms, 13 luxury rooms and 14 classic rooms. Two self-catering units (one unit of which is wheelchair-accessible) are ideal for families or business travellers who would like to make Montagu their home away from home for a couple of days.

The south-facing deck area of Feathers & Flatcaps Coffeeshop and Cocktail Lounge welcomes the morning sun. It also spoils guests with magnificent views over the Langeberg Mountains, while watching the Klein-Karoo sunset after a day of exploring the area. Light lunches and scrumptious platters can be enjoyed on the deck whilst sipping some of the regions’ finest wines, cocktails and mocktails or speciality Bootlegger coffees.

Charlestons Restaurant serves breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is served in our spacious Breakfast Room and glass enclosed Garden Patio overlooking the lush green gardens that the Montagu Country Hotel is renowned for. Dinner is a somewhat more formal affair. Chef Werner Blom enjoys the challenge of fusing traditional South African cuisine with fine dining flair and presentation. Dine by romantic candle light in a classical setting reminiscent of days gone by. Is this the 21st century? NO, we are back in the days when serving was still an art.

Why not settle in for an evening of reading, or catch up with friends before or after dinner in the Lubbe Lounge. The lounge is dedicated to the memory of the late Gert Lubbe who played an integral part in the establishment of Route 62 and is well known in the South African tourism industry. Gert was also the owner of the Hotel and mentor to current hosts P-J and Colene Basson.

Lush gardens surround the hotel and provide a tranquil getaway from the everyday hustle and bustle, whilst two swimming pools bring much relief on hot summer days. The on-site Wellness Spa with its unique mineral-rich jacuzzi will soothe all aches and pains.

A welcome new addition to the property is the activity hub, which is home to three of Montagu’s most popular activity operators – Cape Dry, Flying Feet and Protea Farm Tractor Trips. Guests are able to book their daily excursions and activities, or gather further information about the area from the Montagu-Ashton Tourism Office without having to leave the hotel.

For the classic car lover, why not go for a dashing ride in a Cadillac with American Dream Cars and explore the surrounding areas and/or wine farms in style!

A new dedicated conference, banqueting and team building venue has been established. These new facilities, together with the region’s exciting outdoor activities, its close proximity to Cape Town and our Klein-Karoo hospitality, makes it the perfect location for your next function/event or special celebration.

In Room Facilities:

En-suite bathrooms, television, telephone, air-conditioning as well as coffee and tea making facilities.

Area Information:

Just 15 minutes from the Robertson Wine Route. The Hotel offers a chauffeur driven tour in American Dream Cars from the 1950's. You drink, we drive

Property Facilities:

Montagu lies nestled between two mountain ranges and its crystal clear air is free of any pollution. The town is strategically situated on Route 62 between the Garden Route and Cape Town, offering a very picturesque drive.

The weather is perfect: far enough South to escape the heat of the Klein Karoo and far enough North to get away from the long wet winters of the Cape. Autumn brings on a kaleidoscope of colour that gradually changes into winter with lazy mild sunny days and just the occasional hint of rain. October is undoubtedly the most magical month when the streets are lined with rose gardens in full bloom and the orchards and vineyards are resplendent in fresh green growth.

Montagu is host to less than ten thousand inhabitants, with a variety of entrepreneurs, hoteliers, cabinetmaker, cheese makers, a teddy bear maker, restaurants, and artists.

The area offers a rich history. The most interesting museums being the Montagu Museum, Joubert House ( the oldest local house / residence), the British fort and the Montagu Nature Garden.

The Robertson / Ashton / Montagu wine route is known throughout South Africa. Some of the most well known wine farms being Van Loveren, Graham Beck, Zandvliet and Weltevrede.

There are a variety of hiking trails to choose from. Lover's Walk being ideal for an early morning stroll. This short walk offers a range of surprises that can incude tortoises, dassies, guineafowl, Egyptian geese and the odd baboon or small buck.
The town offers the more adventurous guest several excellent places to do rock climbing and mountain biking.

Pierre Burger's tractor ride to the summit of the Langeberg and the optional potjiekos is a must.

Then famous hot springs, situated less than 3kms outside of town at the Avalon Springs is a haven those who suffer ailments such as arthritis, rheumatism or those who just want to relax and let the warm water soothe away the stressed of a busy life style.

Variety of excellent wine cellars, as well as outdoor and sporing activities such as rock-climbing, hiking, tennis, golf, horse-riding etc

We spent 2 wonderful nights at the Montagu Country Hotel and it was just perfect. The room (Art Deco Deluxe) was spacious and clean and nicely furnished.
The hotel has lots of details and pieces of lovely furniture abound. The established gardens create lovely shady spots to simply sit and have a drink and just relax. My fiancee used the Spa treatment and reported back to me as entirely satisfied !

We had dinner (twice) at the a la Carte restaurant and again, thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a perfect spot for a romantic candlelit dinner.

All the staff are very friendly. It really makes a difference and we always felt so very welcome.
We will be back !

This is a super old style elegant hotel with all the mod cons and has exceptional service to match. Our room was beautiful, clean and had everything we needed to feel pampered and comfortable. Our dog, stand out feature for us was good, uninterrupted Wi-Fi with no connecting hassles. We will definitely be back for another stay.

I love the tranquility of the Hotel. Once you enter the foyer you feel far removed from the outside world. The reception lady and gent were very friendly and courteous. The decor is of a first class standard with lovely displays of antique crockery and furniture pieces.
My bedroom suite was comfortable and clean with a view of the back garden.
I never sleep well in any hotel on the first night but I had no problem at Montagu Hotel and the beautiful rain awoke me from a sound sleep.
I enjoyed a good breakfast, first from the buffet selection and then some hot bacon, mushrooms and a fried egg. The Monday I decided to have a light breakfast from the buffet only. The staff at breakfast on both mornings were attentive and pleasant. Mr Basson even apologized should the repair work have been noisy.
Went back on Monday evening to sample the restaurant menu. Will probably stay again once the roadworks are done.

Dit was heerlik! Friendly and helpful staff at all times! Clean and tidy bedrooms-en-suite with daily top-ups of tea/coffee requirements. Maintenance service always available to assist with checking air-conditioners, jacuzzi baths. etc. Breakfasts always pleasant and a good start to each day, while dinners were tasty and lekker with comfortable portions and variety of accompaniments. Our pet dog Jessie was on her best behavior and loved by all. Thank you for a most happy week in the Cape countryside.

It was comfortable, with staff attuned to what was needed. However the light on all night outside my room (23 in the garden) were quite overpowering.

Quiet little town with all the charm of a bygone era. Loved that they kept so much of the old town and restored so many places.
