Several kilometres west of Dundee in the KwaZulu-Natal Province lies the Blood River Heritage Site. The site commemorates an epic battle that took place between Voortrekkers and Zulus in 1838 and came to be known as the Battle of Blood River. The reason for the battle is still under debate, however, the Blood River Heritage Site describes the actual battle in detail and guides are on hand to offer tours through the facility. At the centre of the museum complex is an impressive wrought iron and bronze life-size casting of 64 wagons placed in a ‘laager’ formation. In this formation, wagons were placed in a circle and the Voortrekkers could then fire upon the Zulu impis (soldiers) from the safety of the inner circle.
