With the scintillating African country of Mozambique attracting more and more attention as an authentic holiday and tourist destination, it seems only appropriate that more of its sleepy coastal towns would be highlighted as potential vacation spots to ‘get away from it all’ Chidenguele is one such town. North of Xai Xai along the EN1, Chidenguele may seemingly be in the middle of nowhere, but it is just 100km out from the capital city of Maputo and approximately 550km from the South African powerhouse city of Johannesburg. However, it is precisely Chidenguele’s remote location that makes it such a special destination and it really is ideal for those wanting to get away from the cut throat world of today’s rat race.
The setting is everything you would expect of a typical African countryside landscape – beautiful blue beach with honey-coloured sand, glorious African sunsets and sunrises, and undulating fertile nature with pockets of coconut palms towering over thickets of cashew nuts that surrounds you from every vantage point possible. Local attractions in this part of the world includes a crisp white chapel with stained glass windows on one hillside and a sandy soccer field with Chidenguele’s name proudly emblazoned in white stone behind it on the opposite hill. There is also a small market alongside the single street running through the village where fruit and vegetables can be purchased. Water activities are the dominating feature here, however, and visitors can look forward to enjoying the likes of kayaking, jet skiing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. It goes without saying that fishing here in Chidenguele is top notch with shore angling quite popular amongst avid anglers.
