More info about Dundee

As you travel by the peaceful agricultural and cattle farms leading to the charming town of Dundee KwaZulu Natal it is hard to perceive that this was the site of the first tragic Anglo-Boer war at Talana. Nestled in the valley of the magnificent Biggarsberg Mountains, the pretty town of Dundee is a popular base from where to explore the rich and dramatic battlefield history of KwaZulu Natal.

Once a coal mining town Dundee has managed to retain its rustic appeal and the area is home to many skilled craft artists. Within the town are supermarkets, fine restaurants, splendid sporting facilities and a golf course. Camp at the caravan park located in town or overnight at lovely bed and breakfasts, stunning guest houses and marvellous lodges within and on the outskirts of the town. The informative Talana Museum, set on the actual site of the battle 2 kilometres out of Dundee, also houses a fascinating glass collection and interesting display on coal mining.

Explore the hills and valleys of Dundee still alive with battle memories of yesteryear; discover the rich pockets of nature hiking the trails offering interesting cannibal caves and prolific wild and birdlife, or enjoy game viewing at the game farms and reserves. Survey the battlefields on horseback or fish abseil and white-water raft at the Buffalo River gorge and Isibindi Eco-Reserve. Historical Anglo-Zulu-Boer drama unfolds before your eyes as you explore the Dundee, Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana battlefields and the impressive Voortrekker Laager of wagons at the Blood River battlefield. Dundee’s hospitable atmosphere, excellent facilities and accommodation, rich history and scenic surroundings are a winning combination for an enriching memorable visit.

About Guest Houses

For a more down to earth experience there are guest houses. Less expensive than hotels, they offer a more homey environment, as well as more privacy. Converted from a private house it’s a much gentler environment and for those with furry friends, there are also pet friendly options. They are usually well situated with shops and places of interest nearby. Being so small it offers a much more personal and intimate attention to it’s upkeep, leaving you with a more polished and homely experience.
