The oldest operating brewery in South Africa, Newlands Brewery in Cape Town invites visitors to tour their facility to discover the history behind the brewery and learn of the processes involved in brewing a world class beer.

South Africans love their beer and the Newlands Brewery ships out millions of beers weekly to all parts of the country. Unique to this brewery is the fact that their beers are brewed using pure spring water that flows naturally from the Table Mountain chain.

The South African Breweries (now called Anheuser-Busch InBev following a successful takeover and making it the largest brewing company in the world) purchased the property in 1956 and restored three of the oldest buildings. These buildings, one of which is the old Tower Brewery itself, are classified as national monuments.

Visitors are taken through the process of mixing, filtering and fermenting the ingredients that consist of spring water, maize (corn), malt and hops, and brewer’s yeast which is later removed. The process is completely natural and free of additives. The residual malt husks and hops mulch is then dried and sold off to farmers as cattle feed. At the conclusion of the tour, visitors are offered 2 complimentary drinks amongst their range of beers. Please be aware that 2 beers will generally place you over the drinking limit of 0.05g per 100ml, we suggest you Uber back to your accommodation.

Outside the premises is a perpetual spring water point, maintained by the Brewery, for the public to collect fresh, natural water at no cost.  

Combine a tour of the historic Newlands Brewery with a trip to watch a game either at the Newlands cricket ground or the rugby stadium, depending on the season. Both are within easy walking distance of the brewery.
