From Franschhoek's Official Tourism Site: Nestled between towering mountains in the beautiful Cape winelands lies the magnificent Franschhoek Valley. This is the food and wine heartland of the country, where splendid wines are grown and our top chefs create international cuisine. Here breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine and the finest wines all combine to create lasting memories.
Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than 300 years ago by the Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a valley rich in history and centres on a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people.
In the village you will find wonderful crafts, art and antique shops and galleries. The main street is lined with coffee shops and restaurants. Only 45 minutes from Cape Town, Franschhoek is the ideal base while you explore the entire Cape winelands.
When travelling around the Western Cape you are going to need somewhere to call home, a place to rest your weary feet after a day of exploration. Franschhoek is this place. Its centrality ensures that travelling distances to all areas of interest are minimal. Even with its central location it remains removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. Good planning and aggressive marketing has kept the number of tourists that visit Franschhoek all year round buoyant. Almost monthly there are festivals and other celebrations which entice all age groups.
The Franschhoek Literary Festival is held annually around the second week in May. A well planned interesting few day with key note speakers. Somehow the winter always seem to commence around this time, so red wine and fireplaces are popular after the lectures.
Franschhoek Bastille Weekend is usually the second weekend in July. The mood is reckless and berets are required. Popular cafe-style music fills the air. The French mini market is brimming with French produce. The party runs all day long.
Franschhoek Uncorked, the new vintage is celebrated over two days with participating local wine estates. And in turn these estates serve light meals that will complement their wines. Breakfast lunch and dinner are served in one or other of the estates, followed by a couple of typical "after-parties". The town is buzzing.
Franschhoek Open Gardens Festival is held the last weekend in October. The old age home is the benefactor and the gardens are truly splendid. Roses in profusion and each garden tells a different story.
Franschhoek Cap Classique & Champagne Festival is held at the famous Huguenot monument. Taste a dozen or more mostly Franschhoek valley bubblies and a few truly French champagnes too. Dainty bites are created by some of the valley's top chefs.
