Kleinrivier Wilderness is stuck away in a valley in the middle of nowhere and is the brainchild, or perhaps the love affair of dedicated friends who want to preserve what we have and protect and nurture it. For an ex pat it is a return to the colours and smells of exploration as a child in the Eastern Cape bush or the vast vistas of the Karoo.
The paths that trail across this stunning landscape are not as easy as some would have it, unless you are used to boots, bush, water bottles and a hard slog. Which clearly I am not. So come prepared if you are not fit, to sweat and toil and get scratched and if you don’t like heights to cling to the sides of pathetically small drops wondering where to put your clumsy feet next.
The bush is old and dense in the gorges and each step seems to take you further back into plant history as you head towards the heights. There are pools and little trickles to give you cool water to wash your face and your feet and if you like to swim in. I drank from the fresh water whenever I could as the days were hot.
I was there when the butterflies filled the valley and I was surrounded by thousands of brown, gold and white soft wings as I toiled ever upwards hoping and failing to reach the plateaux.
Even half way towards the top the views are extraordinary with a huge deep blue sky and purple mountains hazed against the horizon. Peace can be found here if you take the time to sit and listen.
Dassiekrans accommodation is comfortable and a perfect oasis. The outside shower is a wonder to a burnt and aching body after hours spent climbing into the quiet.
This is someone’s paradise and we are lucky enough to be able to share it, so don’t hesitate to stay for at least a day or two, or more if you can.
Normally I don't give a five star rating easily as there are so many criteria that I take into account. But there were some things that I think helped tip Kleinrivier Wilderness into the five star category and not least of these was the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to provide some extra and necessary service to make my stay possible.
Beautifully located tented camp in amongst indigenous trees. We did the Tierhout trail ages ranging from 7-70 yr if you don't have a head for heights take another route!! Beautiful swimming pools at the top of the kloof. Remember to pack extra matches and kitchen towels. Listen for the wood owl at night. Would recommend this camp for its peace and beauty
Nice and simple if one wants quiet getaway in Uitenhage.
