Blyde River Canyon (Molatse Canyon)
The Blyde River Canyon (Molatse Canyon) is a significant natural feature of South Africa and is the third largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. It is the second largest canyon in Africa, and is known as one of the great wonders of nature on the continent.
It was formed by rivers cutting deep into the escarpment and eroding millions of tons of rock which were carried to the Lowveld and beyond to the Indian Ocean. It is 26 kilometres' in length and about 800 meters deep.
One of the best viewpoints of the Blyde River Canyon are of the "Three Rondavels". These are huge, round rocks, thought to be reminiscent of the houses or huts of the indigenous people, known as rondavels. This canyon is part of the famous Panorama route that starts at the town Graskop and includes God's Window, the Pinnacle, Bourke's Luck Potholes and many spectacular Waterfalls.
God's Window
At God's Window on the Escarpment, about 9.2 km north of Graskop, majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the game reserves that have made the area one of Africa?s prime wildlife destinations which include the Kruger National Park.
