InstantUnique little time capsule - remnants of yesteryear with all the mod cons of modern living and spectacular Mountain settings. Definitely a place to see and experience!
It is a very beautiful town with friendly people.
Peace and quiet at Christmas time. A good Christmas lunch at Gosto restaurant (but beware the R100 cover charge per person). "Eat cheese" for a wonderful breakfast platter. Golden Gate in all its majesty.
It's a quaint little town that knows how to keep tourists happy. Stop in the town square on a weekend for a walk around the market and a cold beer at the brewery.
It is a beautiful village. Many restaurants.
The mountain views and the art galleries in Clarens.
The best part of Clarens is that there is always something happening and the people are super friendly.
Clarens is a beautiful quaint little town. It has everything you could possibility need, gorgeous gift shops, restaurants with delicious food and a craft brewery all set in the majestic mountains. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Must visits : The Purple Onion, which is a deli kind of store. Clarens Brewery is a must, the beer & ciders are great and the food menu is limited but fantastic. Also Red Stone Distillery has a great range of gins and there cocktails are also great. The Art Cafe is fantastic restaurant if you have kids, as they have a nice big play area for them and the food is delicious. And there cakes are to die for.
Excellent weekend breakaway in Clarens.
Loved everything about Clarens - people, restaurants, cherry bier (amazing), shops. Only the road to get there was bad with lots of potholes at a stage.
The tiny Free State town of Clarens is one of South Africa’s finest destinations as it boasts a myriad of wonderful activities to enjoy for any taste or preference. The immense beauty that Clarens finds itself ensconced in is alone worth the visit: the town is situated at the foothills of the majestic Maluti Mountains and is blessed with resplendent natural magnificence that is especially accentuated during the months of autumn when everything is bathed and drenched in different shades of gold. Additionally, being approximately 300km outside of Durban or Johannesburg, Clarens also has a very good and convenient geographical location.
Because of its breathtaking aesthetic appeal, Clarens has become a lure for artists and photographers who have come to find bucketfuls of inspiration after spending time in this place. If you’re an avid art lover or even mildly interested in the subject, then a visit to Clarens will prove most rewarding; various artists have opened their galleries to the public here, while many of the farms nearby are home to precious Bushmen (San) paintings. Other interests of note include the museum, church, and the ‘Cinderella Castle’ that was built using 50 000 beer bottles. Clarens also features a slew of fine restaurants that are sure to satisfy the palette and appetite of any patron.
Clarens is not just about art and fine dining, however. In recent years, the town has become known as a very popular fly-fishing spot with some of the best fly fishing opportunities available; other draw cards are the extreme sports of white water rafting and abseiling. If this is not enough, Clarens is also in close proximity to the sumptuous Golden Gate Nature Reserve and the spellbinding Sterkfontein Dam Reserve.
For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
