Recently revamped, the Long Street Baths in Cape Town city has attracted swimmers and lovers of a steam treatment for over a century. Inside the 1908 facility is a popular 25m heated pool overlooked by bright murals depicting old time street scenes that have been beautifully restored, and a 12m kiddie’s pool. The adjoining Turkish steam baths has a sauna, steam rooms, a hot room and showers and although the services of a masseuse is no longer, they are still as popular as when the steam baths were first introduced in 1929. Before 2007, visitors were given a full authentic hammam experience that included a soaking by a masseur using traditional black soap. The steam baths are open to women for half of the week and men for the remaining half, ask your hosts for details. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
