Experience this magical, untouched place on foot while walking through the trails of Lotheni which is situated in a remote section of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. With spectacular views of the Drakensberg, birdwatching and peaceful walks will boost your fitness levels while promoting relaxation and escapism. The Emadundwini Trail is a 11.8 km circular route crossing a number of small streams and travelling up a steep incline while less strenuous trails such as the Eagle, Falls, Canyon, Jacobs Ladder and the historically interesting Gelib Tree are also recommended. Spot over 172 species of bird, ride your mountain bike for miles and fish for trout or explore a few of the activities in this area. Sixteen kilometres of the Lotheni river is available for fly fishermen.
Swimming in the Lotheni river is safe unless it is in flood and there is a very good swimming spot approximately 1km below the camp. The hutted camp consists of 12 self contained chalets and two fully self-contained 6 bed cottages with fire places. Visitors should bring food supplies because the nearest source of provisions is at the Lotheni store which is 14km from the camp. After 50 km on a gravel road, the fainthearted can find their way home on a main road or the desperate can purchase supplies at the nearest town at Underberg. Hikers need to be well equipped as the weather is subject to change at short notice and can become very cold.
