Manaba lies within the jurisdiction of the large resort town of Margate on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. It’s a popular seaside holiday destination with a safe Blue Flag certified beach, known as Lucien Beach, protected by shark nets and lifeguards on duty during peak season.

This section of Kwa-Zulu-Natal’s scenic coastline is referred to as the Hibiscus Coast, a sub-tropical lush region with golden beaches, fresh sea air and warm inviting seas typified by Manaba.

Things to do

At Manaba, beach-related activities are the primary attraction; spend your days on the safe and spotless beach sun tanning and swimming, explore the deep lagoon under a waterfall at nearby Uvongo, fish off the Margate pier, surf the swell at St Michaels-on-sea or canoe along the Mbizane River.

Manaba is within an easy drive of the 11 Golf courses spread throughout the south coast.

You can visit the magnificent 24km Oribi Gorge Ravine where huge bodies of water once sculpted the gorge 400m deep into the earth. The area is overflowing with stunning views and adventure activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and a death-defying swing over the canyon.

Fun rides at Margate Amusement Park, fresh water pools and restaurants along the beachfront are sure to keep the family thoroughly entertained.

Where to Eat

The perfect climate encourages diners to sit out on the patio at Breakers Restaurant in Uvongo and enjoy the marvelously fresh seafood on offer. Good kiddies menu, Sunday lunches are popular.

Pistols Saloon in Ramsgate is a must-visit. The venue has an American Wild West theme serving American style dishes (with a couple of German favourites too) in a family-friendly environment. Bring carrots to feed the donkey roaming the restaurant and any swearing will result in a spot fine. Interesting museum on the premises.

Excellent dishes  are served at the Lobster Pot in Margate .

Coffee on the Square is a breezy restaurant offering heavenly light meals. Enjoy a delightful and filling breakfast accompanied by a superb coffee.

Night Life

A good old fashioned pub is to describe The Village Tavern in Margate. The resident DJ will get your feet stomping and the owners claim to serve the cheapest drinks in South Africa. Regular karaoke evenings.

Always rocking with the freshest DJs, the long-established Backline Night Club pulls in the crowds for their themed parties.

Air The nearest airport is King Shaka International Airport, 140km from Manaba, however, Margate has a small airport for chartered flights.

Car Several car rental agencies are based in Margate and at King Shaka airport to hire a vehicle, or you could order a rental online.

Taxi There are a number of metered taxi companies in Margate and Margate Coach & Shuttle Services operate a daily shuttle to King Shaka airport.

Did you know?

In 1924, several Margate beach onlookers witnessed a pair of orca killer whales battling a gigantic creature said to be half-elephant, half-polar bear. The carcass washed up onto shore and was measured at 14m in length. Nicknamed Trunko, the creature was never identified because it was left to rot on the beach for 10 days before being reclaimed by the sea.
