Arrangements and planning are well on the way for a weekend of Swiss fun when Clarens hosts a world first on the weekend of the 4th August. Kopano (the Sesotho word for synergy).
This festival promises a ‘Local is Lekker’ flea market to showcase locally handcrafted wares, as well as services. Expect the award-winning cheeses, the extraordinary preserves, delicious biltong, priceless necklaces, dream-inspiring eiderdowns, quirky clay pots; as well as lots of fun for children; a programme of dance and merriment; with a generous dollop of mirth.
Local entertainer, Craig Walters, and his partner Simara have been training the local kids in the art of street performance with stilt walking and juggling skills. Local guides have been trained to take visitors of walking tours of the village, so providing tourism skills to the locals. As these are not certified guides, there is no charge but donations are welcome.
But what is the Clarens – Swiss connection? When Paul Kruger went to Europe to seek help in the 1899 war against the British he fell ill and died in Clarens, Switzerland. In 1912 the local selected the name Clarens for their new settlement in his honour. A little known fact is that the local NG Kerk is a copy of a Swiss church.

Clarens is a beautiful quaint little town. It has everything you could possibility need, gorgeous gift shops, restaurants with delicious food and a craft brewery all set in the majestic mountains. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Must visits : The Purple Onion, which is a deli kind of store. Clarens Brewery is a must, the beer & ciders are great and the food menu is limited but fantastic. Also Red Stone Distillery has a great range of gins and there cocktails are also great. The Art Cafe is fantastic restaurant if you have kids, as they have a nice big play area for them and the food is delicious. And there cakes are to die for.

Loved everything about Clarens - people, restaurants, cherry bier (amazing), shops. Only the road to get there was bad with lots of potholes at a stage.
