Riverside Cottages is a subdivision of the farm Bourgogne which was among the first Huguenot farms proclaimed in 1694. The farm was first granted to Pierre de Villiers, by Simon van der Stel. However, in 1800 the farm changed hands, and was held by the Roux family for many years. The Le Roux family descendants continue to farm here to this day, on our behalf. Shaded by 150 year old oaks, the farm house at La Bourgogne is a classic example of "Cape English" style, which is in fact early to mid Victorian. Our farm has a warmth and charm which captivates all who visit us.
La Bourgogne - home to Riverside Cottages - is a working farm producing high quality wine and other farm products. The Riverside Cottages at La Bourgogne are converted staff houses, dating back to 1952, and are situated on the banks of the river between a pear orchard to the west and oaks and willows to the east. The glow of sunset colours on the Middagkrans Mountains, framed by the trees, is spectacular.
A swimming pool with sun loungers, parasols and a deck overhangs the river providing the perfect place to unwind and take in Franschhoek's magnificent mountain views whilst having a casual braai. Our cottages are comfortable living in a beautiful and tranquil setting, ideal for wonderful summers, family retreat or a cozy, romantic winter weekend away. The stream which runs through the farm, is a tributary of the Franschhoek River, and plays a meaningful role in the supply of water to our farm, and to those down stream of us. Please respect the river and all its environs.
The farm produces plums, pears, butternut, grapes and olives. We supply plums to export markets in Europe and the Mid/Far East, and the farm continues to win prizes and awards due to the efforts of our farming team.
