Planning a Digital Detox Weekend: Steps and Phone Settings

Plan a weekend away from your screens: what to set up beforehand, the iPhone Focus and Android Digital Wellbeing settings, and how to come back.

A digital detox weekend is a planned break, usually from Friday evening to Sunday evening, when your phone is limited to calls and messages from a few chosen people. It works best when you set things up in advance: tell people, switch on the right phone settings and plan what you will do with the time. Both iPhone and Android phones have built-in tools that do most of the work, and the steps below come from Apple’s and Google’s own help pages.

What should you do before the weekend starts?

Tell the people who need to know, set an automatic email reply and download anything you will need offline. A detox fails fast if your manager, your family or a client expects an answer on Saturday morning.

Set an out-of-office reply

In Gmail on a computer, Google says to open Settings, then See all settings, and on the General tab turn on the Vacation responder. Fill in the date range, subject and message, then click Save Changes. There is an option to send the reply to your contacts only.

Download maps for offline use

If you are heading out of town, download the area in Google Maps before you leave. Google Maps Help explains that you can tap your profile picture, choose Offline maps, then Select your own map, adjust the area and tap Download.

Know the limits before you rely on it. Google says that offline, you can get driving directions within the downloaded area, but transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable, and you get no traffic information or alternative routes. Offline maps also expire and need updating.

  • Tell family and close friends how to reach you in an emergency
  • Set the email auto-reply with the date you will be back
  • Download maps, tickets and booking confirmations
  • Charge an old-fashioned alarm clock if your phone usually wakes you
  • Put a book, a notebook or a game where your phone usually sits

How do you set up an iPhone for a detox?

Use a Focus to silence notifications, and Screen Time to restrict apps. According to Apple Support, you go to Settings, tap Focus, then choose a Focus such as Do Not Disturb or Personal. From there you can:

  • Tap People to choose who can still reach you
  • Tap Apps to choose which apps can still send notifications
  • Choose a Lock Screen or Home Screen page to show while the Focus is on, which helps limit distractions
  • Tap Add Schedule so the Focus turns on automatically at a set time or place

You can also create a custom Focus: in Settings, tap Focus, tap the add button, then Custom, and give it a name such as “Weekend”. Apple notes that if Share Across Devices is on, your Focus settings apply on your other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so an iPad or Mac on the same account stays quiet too.

Screen Time

On iOS 27, Apple uses Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances. Go to Settings, tap Screen Time, tap Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule and add time windows for the days you choose. Time Allowances let you limit categories such as Entertainment, Games or Social Media.

On iOS 18, the equivalent setting is called Downtime: go to Settings, then Screen Time, tap Downtime and either turn it on until tomorrow or schedule it. Apple says that during downtime, only calls, messages and apps you choose to allow are available.

Whichever version you have, set up Always Allowed in Screen Time. Apple suggests adding family members, or the Health app, so they stay available for emergencies.

How do you set up an Android phone for a detox?

Use Digital Wellbeing, which has Focus mode, app timers and Bedtime mode. Google notes that some steps may vary by device, so menu names on your phone may differ slightly.

  • Focus mode: open Settings, tap Digital Wellbeing, then Focus mode. Select the apps to pause and tap Turn on now, or tap Set a schedule so it starts on its own. While it is on, you cannot use those apps or get their notifications. If you really need one, Take a break unpauses them for a time you choose.
  • App timers: in Settings, Digital Wellbeing, App timers, tap Set timer next to an app and pick a limit. When time runs out, the app closes and its icon dims. Timers reset at midnight.
  • Bedtime mode: Google’s bedtime help page says it silences your phone and removes the screen’s colour. Options include Grayscale, which turns the screen black and white, and keeping the screen dark.

Grayscale does not have to wait for bedtime. You can leave it on for the whole weekend, so the screen looks plain whenever you pick the phone up.

What will you do with the time?

Plan the weekend before it starts, or the phone will fill the gaps. Pick one or two things for each day that do not need a screen, and make them easy to start.

  • A morning walk to a market, a park or a viewpoint you have not visited
  • Cooking a slow meal with friends or family
  • A day trip using the offline map and a paper list of stops
  • A book you have been meaning to finish
  • Writing in a notebook: plans, letters or a simple journal of the weekend

How do you come back after the weekend?

Turn the settings off on purpose, and keep at least one of them. On Android, the Digital Wellbeing screen shows your screen time, how many times you opened the phone and how many notifications you received, so you can compare the week before and the week after.

Pick one change to keep, such as a nightly Focus or a timer on a single app, so the weekend leaves something behind. Choose yours on Sunday evening, before Monday’s messages arrive.
