Another of Johannesburg’s renowned art destinations, the Standard Bank Gallery houses an envious collection of artwork that dates back to 1990 when the bank first opened the gallery in the city centre.
The bank operates the gallery as a non-profit patron of the arts and helps to educate the public in understanding and appreciating artistic expression. In addition to the gallery, the Standard Bank sponsors a young artist of the year award and the winners get to exhibit their work at the gallery. The award is a major driver in the creative world and well-known local celebrities such as Johnny Clegg and Sibongile Khumalo were past winners.
At the Standard Bank Gallery, a few resident artists are on hand to discuss their work to enquiring art lovers while guided tours of the facility can be arranged for interested groups.
