Offline Map Apps Worth Installing Before a Road Trip

Google Maps, Apple Maps, Organic Maps and Maps.me compared for offline use, with steps to download maps before a road trip.

The offline map apps worth installing before a road trip are Google Maps (with offline areas downloaded), Apple Maps if you use an iPhone, and Organic Maps, a free app built on OpenStreetMap data. Maps.me is another OpenStreetMap-based option, with some trade-offs covered below. Download the maps at home on Wi-Fi, because a map you forgot to save is no help once the signal drops on a long stretch of road.

Each app handles offline use differently. The biggest difference is which kinds of directions still work when your phone has no data, so that is the first thing to check against the trip you have planned.

Why download maps before you leave

A downloaded map lets your phone show where you are and plan a route using GPS alone, with no mobile data. That matters on cross-border drives, in national parks and on rural roads where coverage comes and goes. It also saves you from paying roaming rates for map data in a neighbouring country.

Download on a home or hotel Wi-Fi connection. Map areas can be large, and Apple Maps, for one, downloads over Wi-Fi only unless you change the setting.

Google Maps offline areas

Google Maps lets you save a chosen area to your phone and get driving directions inside it without a connection. It is the app most people already have, which makes it the easiest place to start.

How to download an area

According to Google Maps Help, you can search for a place, open its place card, tap More, then Download offline map and Download. The other route is to tap your profile picture, choose Offline maps, then Select your own map, adjust the box to cover your route and tap Download. The iPhone steps are the same.

On Android 6.0 and later you can save offline maps to an SD card from the Offline maps settings, as long as the card is set up as portable storage. That helps on phones with little internal space.

What works offline, and what doesn’t

Only driving directions work offline in Google Maps, and only when the whole route sits inside your downloaded area. Google states that transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable offline, and that you won’t get traffic information or alternate routes while driving offline. If your trip includes long walks or hikes, pair Google Maps with one of the apps below.

Keeping maps current

Offline maps in Google Maps expire and need updating. When a saved map will expire in 15 days or less and your phone is on Wi-Fi, Google Maps tries to update it automatically. You can also update by hand from Offline maps, or turn on auto-update in the settings there.

Google also notes that offline maps can’t be downloaded in some countries or regions, because of contractual limits, language support, address formats or other reasons. Test the download for your destination before the day you leave.

Apple Maps on iPhone

Apple Maps on iPhone can save an area for offline use, with more working offline than Google Maps. Apple’s iPhone User Guide says that without Wi-Fi or mobile service you can still get turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling or transit, see your estimated arrival time, and view place details such as opening hours and ratings.

To download, touch and hold the map until a pin appears and tap Download. You can also tap your picture or initials next to the search field, choose Offline Maps, then Add Offline Map. Selecting a smaller area makes the download smaller.

Downloads use Wi-Fi only unless you change it. In the Offline Maps screen you can switch Wi-Fi Only to Wi-Fi + Cellular, keep Automatic Updates on (it is on by default), or turn on Optimize Storage to delete maps you no longer use. As with Google, Apple says offline maps aren’t available in all countries or regions.

Organic Maps

Organic Maps is a free, open-source map app designed to work fully offline. Its official site says 100% of features work without an internet connection, with no ads, no tracking and no data collection. It is released under the Apache License 2.0 and is available from the App Store, Google Play, Huawei AppGallery and F-Droid.

The app uses OpenStreetMap data, which a community of volunteer and professional mappers builds and maintains. Organic Maps offers turn-by-turn navigation for walking, cycling and driving with voice guidance, and it works with CarPlay and Android Auto. For people heading into hills or parks, it also shows contour lines, elevation profiles, hiking trails and cycling routes.

Routes start from your current location, and the route FAQ lists car, pedestrian, subway and bike modes. If a download fails, the Organic Maps FAQ suggests checking free storage, trying another Wi-Fi network, or deleting and re-downloading very old maps.

Maps.me

Maps.me is an offline map app for iPhone and Android. Its map data comes from OpenStreetMap, according to the OpenStreetMap Wiki. The same page lists offline search, offline routing and GPS track recording among its features.

Two points from that wiki page are worth weighing before you install it. First, it reports that the app sends activity data, including locations used, to Maps.me and to outside parties such as tracking services, even when maps are already downloaded. Second, it records that a download limit for free users returned in spring 2024, with a paid Pro subscription listed at 3.79 euros a month or 35.99 euros a year as of March 2024. Prices change, so check the app store listing before you pay.

If tracking is a concern, the wiki names Organic Maps and CoMaps as forks without trackers. CoMaps was started in early 2025 by former Organic Maps contributors.

Before you set off: a short checklist

Run through these steps the day before the trip, while you still have good Wi-Fi.

  • Download the full route, including the towns at both ends and any border crossing, not only the destination.
  • Check free space on your phone first; Organic Maps lists low storage as a common reason downloads fail.
  • Update any Google Maps area close to expiry so it doesn’t lapse mid-trip.
  • Put the phone in airplane mode at home and open the map to confirm it loads and plans a route.
  • Keep two apps: Google Maps or Apple Maps for driving, plus Organic Maps for walking and trails.
  • Save your accommodation and fuel stops as favourites or bookmarks so they show up without a search.

With the maps saved and tested, your phone can find the way using GPS even where the signal bars disappear.
